Microsoft won't cut perks, but here's how much they cost
Ever since Microsoft drew an outcry from its employees when it cut its complimentary towel service during the last recession, perks have been a sensitive matter at the company. An internal PowerPoint presentation reviewed by the Seattle P-I shows for the first time just how much Microsoft spends to keep its employees placated.
Microsoft offers its employees free transportation to and from work via its Connector bus system, a free shuttle service on campus, complimentary beverages, and since 2006 the towel service as well.
Last month, when Microsoft executives reviewed a scenario to cut costs, the company listed many of the perks as "additional potential cuts." A personal familiar with the matter, though, says Microsoft does not plan to cut any employee perks.
Still, Microsoft estimated it could save $88 million in fiscal year 2010 if it did decide to cut them, according to the internal PowerPoint presentation. Here's how much the company estimates various perks will cost in fiscal year 2010, according to the document:
Catering: $12 million
iCup (Starbucks hot beverage program): $1 million
Food subsidy: $8 million
Free beverages: $20 million
Compostables: $1 million
